Restraint and Seclusion Public Forums, Webinars and Public Input

FYI – Please distribute to everyone you know who may be interested!!  Check your disability list servs and make sure this info. has been distributed, if not, please post!  Forward this to at least 10 other people in the disability community.

I will be participating with GAO in the January 28th Community Participation Forum on Restraint and Seclusion in Macon from 10-2. Please participate in the forum with GAO below, webinars and/or the community participation forums and encourage others to do so as well. We need parents and other disability organizations involved, making public comment, participating in the forums and most importantly, being vocal and outspoken on this issue.  I have personally advocated for too many students who were severely harmed by restraint and seclusion.  Help me, help others.

School districts are organized.  Parents and the Advocacy Community need to get organized and vocal too, in order to combat school district and school district attorney input!  Even if this is not your issue or an issue that affects your child per se, please find out how you can help and give input. That is what these forums teach you.  Make the time!  Come see us!  We will help you!  You CAN make a difference in the life of a child!!!

Talk to your favorite disability organization today, and make sure they are also involved and participating!!  Spread the word!

What Do I Need to Know?  (From the P2P weblink above….)

star4bulletChildren with disabilities are subjected to restraint and seclusion in schools more than children without disabilities.  The use of restraint and seclusion with students with disabilities is often for behaviors over which they have little or no control.

star4bulletThere is no research that shows that the use of restraint or seclusion is beneficial for children.  In fact, "research confirms that physical restraint and seclusion are not therapeutic; nor are these practices effective means to calm or teach children, and may have an opposite effect while simultaneously decreasing a child's ability to learn."  (H.R.4247)

Thank you!!
