Advocates Advice - Draft IEP's
I have always advised parents to request a Draft IEP prior to your IEP meetings so that you can review them for accuracy, see any changes made by the school system and see the proposed Present Level’s of Performance (PLOP’s) and recommended Goals/Objectives/Accommodations.
In several cases recently I’m finding that the school district is only providing a copy of the old IEP as a Draft, with NO updates or changes. This is not what you want and I find it a sneaky way for the district to keep parents in the dark, make it more difficult for them in the IEP, and so they can will not be fully prepared at the IEP meeting.
Therefore, be sure to be specific when you request a copy of your Draft IEP. Make sure in your request, you include you want an updated Draft IEP with their proposed updates to PLOP’s, goals/objectives and services. This is NOT predetermination as you are asking for their proposals that will be discussed at the IEP meeting. Threaten to/or reschedule the IEP meeting if they cannot provide this information in advance of your meeting. It’s always best to go in prepared……
Sneaky, sneaky, sneaky………just when I thought I had seen it all.
Please share with others as I know this must be happening to others as well.
